Feeling Overwhelmed? Here Are 3 Things You Can Do Now

In the last few weeks, I've probably been the most overwhelmed (albeit grateful) than I've been in a long time. Some of my work situations changed, I planned a vacation with my husband so I needed to plan over a months worth of work so things didn't fall through the cracks, and I had to pack for myself and my daughter. I'd been on 14 airplanes, missed a shuttle from a delay and had to sleep at the airport, and ended up in the hospital.

So, yeah. Overwhelmed.

My skin started going crazy. I wasn't eating or sleeping, and I was living in survival mode once I got back from my trip and tried to assume my responsibilities. I would sit and attempt to get work done but my mind spiraled in and out of tasks and thoughts. So I took a step back to regain control over my life.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, here are 3 things that you can do right now that can help you refocus:

  • Stop
Step away from what you’re doing.
  • Have a spa night
If you’re stressed, chances are your skin may be reflecting
  • Mindfulness practice
There are many different ways to engage in a mindfulness practice but if you are new to this idea, one of the most simple ways to engage in this practice is to connect with your 5 sense. It will only take you a few minutes to go through this exercise. Start by focusing on your breath and relaxing your head and neck. Breathe deeply, in through your nose and out through your mouth, for a few seconds.

Start taking notice of your 5 senses.
Touch | Taste | Feel | Smell | Hear

What are you touching? What do your feet feel like on the ground? What are you tasting? Take notice of the way your clothes feel on your body. Is it soft? Does it feel structure like denim or thin and slippery like satin? What do you hear happening around you? After connecting to your breath and grounding in your environment, open your eyes and ease back into your day.

Taking time to take care of yourself isn't selfish. You have permission to breathe.

P.S. Let's get to know each other!
